Description:
Titus and Hicks Mill. Located north of Jackson Street at 14 West Canal Street on the mill race, this mill was one of the city's first gristmills. Built in 1837 by Almon Whitcomb, it was sold to several owners, until brothers J.J. and Ellery Hicks bought it in 1852, at which time the building was rebuilt. The 1852 structure was torn down and again rebuilt in 1874. In 1853, Captain Richard F. Titus bought J. J. Hicks' half interest in the mill and after his death, his sons continued to operate it into the 1900's.
