The first Battle Creek College, located on the west side of Washington Avenue across from the Sanitarium, operated from 1875 until 1901. The Seventh-day Adventist Church bought the 12 acres for the school from Erastus Hussey for $16,000 and constructed the building at a cost of $30,000, according to a history published in the Nov. 6, 1949, Enquirer and News. The Adventists moved the the institution to Berrien Springs, where it today operates as Andrews University.
