Description:
Dan Brock, a street department employee for more than 24 years, operates a steam shovel to load horse-drawn wagons with dirt taken from the area just behind Arthur Street. The dirt was dumped in the area along the millpond to widen what is now Riverside Drive. The year was 1919, the last year that horses were used in the hauling process. The Battle Creek Street Department acquired its first motorized vehicles the following year. Brock died in 1951. His widow, Helen Spear, supplied the photograph, which was published in the Oct. 6, 1979, Enquirer and News.
