Description:
This portrait of the entrance to Driving Park is dated 1879, although a Jan. 1, 1937, caption in the Battle Creek Enquirer and Evening News notes that the park was built between 1880 and 1881 "in a wet meadow on Hamblin's flats." It was bordered by Grove, McCamly and Ravine streets on three sides. "For 15 years or more, the park was the scene of all big outdoor events in Battle Creek, among them the old Battle Creek Nine Spots baseball games. The handwritten caption on the photo reads, "John L. Doland, 1879, Our Horse in the Race."
