Description:
This house at 71 University Ave. in Battle Creek was the second home of Calhoun County Chapter of the American Red Cross, first established in the city in 1916. Its first home at Fort Custer was a single-story, 90-by-40 feet structure. After moving to University Avenue, the organization in 1943 leased rooms in the Woodward Square Building at 25 E. Michigan Ave. Subsequent homes included offices in the Capital Building and the United Community Fund offices. It wasn't until 1972 that the local chapter would own a headquarters building on the corner of West Van Buren and Tompkins streets, across the street from the Enquirer and News.
