Description:
The ornate Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot at 175 Main St. in Battle Creek handled passenger and freight traffic from July 1906 until 1971. Talk of train traffic returning to the depot — then being used for GTW offices — surfaced in August 1973, but it was short-lived. Grand Trunk considered tearing the building down in 1986, but the concerted efforts of city officials and preservationists stayed its plans. In 1988, Community Action Agency bought the building. An example of Moorish-Victorian-style architecture, the depot is constructed of Maine granite and paving blocks laid in Flemish bond. The roof is shaped with semi-glazed Spanish tile.
