With the benefit of Willard Library's extensive collection of Battle Creek City Directories, it is possible to date this ancient photograph to 1897 when Samuel McKay, grocer, and James Barden, Butcher, were in business side by side. The building stood near downtown at 81-83 Calhoun Street at the intersection with Franklin. Life at the time on the dusty street was strictly horse- and pedal-powered. Note the watermelons lined up on the boardwalk under the canopy |
