Swanson Cookie Co., maker of Archway Cookies, completed an expansion in 1956 and moved offices from an adjacent house into these quarters, which included an addition that doubled the bakery capacity. Harold and Ruth Swanson founded the company on that very spot in 1936, making doughnuts. They switched to cookies during World War II because of shortening rationing and grew to a nationwide enterprise. A Jan. 1, 1957, article in the Enquirer and News reported the company had 23 plants in the United States and Canada. Archway Cookies Inc. bought the company from Ruth Swanson Venn in May 1988 with an agreement to keep the bakery running for 5 years. The company closed the bakery on May 20, 1993. |
