dc.description	12 State Street East, Arnold Block. Demolished in 1983. This structure was built by one of Battle Creek's most notorious characters, Adam C. Arnold. It is believed that this building is where he murdered his son in 1895. From The Battle Creek Moon, February 9, 1895, p.8: "...The Arnold block is a four story brick structure with a blue-stone front. The basement is a regular vault,as dark as pitch and twice as dreadful. It begins under the sidewalk where there is a place built expressly to receive stolen chickens. Their puny cackles cannot reach the outside world and no one, not even the police would think of searching there. The remainder of the cellar is divided into compartments where the light of day never reaches, and one is filled with casks of whiskey from 16 to 18 years old. The others are stored with old stoves, furniture and a thousand peculiar articles, and it is said some of the stoves were put in red hot. The first floor was originally intended for a saloon and restaurant, but is now unoccupied. The second floor is reached by a narrow stairway, and contains what the old man calls his office. This office is filled with trinkets, watches, jewelry, musical instruments, and, in fact, almost everything under the sun. and is supposed to be the place where George was killed. Dickens' old curiosity shop would not be in it with this collection and when the third floor is reached there is no possible comparison. The remainder of the second floor is divided into sleeping rooms and store rooms, the former being occupied by some shady people. The third floor is stocked with second-hand goods and there is everything from an organ and a piano to a monkey wrench... . A respectable Battle Creek man would imagine he was taking his life in his hands if he ventured into the place."	en_US
