Frances Titus, Sojourner Truth's friend and travelling companion
Frances Walling Titus, wife of prosperous Battle Creek miller, Richard F. Titus, was the primary friend and benefactor of Sojourner Truth in Battle Creek. An ardent Quaker, Frances Titus moved to Battle Creek in 1844 and devoted herself to social causes, including the establishment of a school to teach freed slaves to read and write, which met on the second floor of the Battle Creek City Hall. Later she was instrumental in the founding of the Michigan and Battle Creek Suffrage Societies, and assisted Sojourner Truth edit and publish four editions of her autobiography. Titus died in her home at 113 Maple Street in Battle Creek on April 21, 1894.
