Description:
The Presbyterian Church at 111 Capital Ave. N.E. in Battle Creek is on the site of the former home of Capt. Richard Titus. Titus was a sea captain and made trips from Boston to the West Indies. His sweetheart, however, refused to marry him unless he gave up the sea, so he closed out his interest and went west with his bride looking for a home. In 1848, they settled in Battle Creek, where Titus bought a half interest in the mill later known as Titus and Hicks. He purchased the half-acre for $350. Then considered in the country, the land is today in the center of town.
