Postcard showing a photo of the fire at the Haskell Home for Orphans, c. 1909. The Haskell home was dedicated on January 26, 1894. It was built by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg to take care of orphaned children and teach them trades. Named for benefactress Caroline Haskell who donated $30,000 for its construction, the Haskell Home depended on charitable contributions for its operation. It burned on February 5, 1909 after a fire of suspicious origin. Three children were killed in the fire and are buried in the Haskell Home Cemetery on Hubbard Street.
Written on back: A view of the N.W. corner from the window marked x a number of the children jumped. Two girls were afraid to jump and while they stood before the window the floor gave away and they went down with it, all we found was 3 pices of bones and do not know whether it was all from 1 body or a part of the two a colored boy also went down but we could not find any part of him. |
