Postcard showing a photo of the Post Tavern and Annex in downtown Battle Creek on the southwest corner of McCamly Street and West Main (now West Michigan Avenue), c. 1913. The Post Tavern was built by C. W. Post, opening on January 1, 1901. It was advertised as the "finest hotel between Detroit and Chicago," boasting electric lights, private telephones, private baths, and an English style pub. The Post family lived in a large apartment in the Tavern, furnished in dark Victorian Style. The ten story addition in back of the main hotel building was constructed in 1912-1913. Post also built the Marjorie Block across West Main from the Tavern in 1901, the Post Building directly across McCamly Street from the Tavern and connected by a pedestrian bridge, and the 2,000 seat Post Theater in 1902. The original Tavern building was demolished in 1960 and the annex continued to operate as a Motor Inn until 1969 when it was also closed. The Marjorie Block was razed in 1930 to make way for the construction of the Central National Bank tower and the Post Building was razed in 1985.
