The first wave of patients at Percy Jones General army hospital arrived Feb. 15, 1943. The Enquirer and News weekly feature, "News from the Home Front" noted in the Feb. 21 edition that about 175 casualties from the Pacific battlefronts arrived by train, and that visiting families were finding it difficult to secure hotel rooms. The hospital was formally dedicated Feb. 22, when 31 of the patients received Purple Heart medals. Percy Jones General treated more than 78,000 veterans for injuries suffered during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
