Description:
The Camp Custer base hospital was built in 1917 to accommodate up to 2,200 patients, although the March 18, 1919, Battle Creek Enquirer and The Evening News reported that more than 1,000 of those beds were never used. Built at a cost of "more than a million dollars, and upon which was spent almost as much in extensions less than a year ago," the unit was reduced in 1919 to a "camp or regimental hospital," with a capacity of about 300 beds.
