This photograph submitted by Robert K. Jeffers provides of glimpse of the money order department at the Battle Creek post office circa 1913. Freeman Jeffers, in the foreground, was a money order clerk then but later became assistant postmaster. At the adding machine, seated, is Nile Toland, and standing at the window is George J. Hamilton, who would retire in 1941 after 39 years with the U.S. Postal Service. The photograph, published in the Enquirer and News on Dec. 31, 1977, was taken just six or so years after the post office moved to the building on East Main Street (East Michigan Ave.), today known as the Commerce Pointe office building. |
