Fred Garnsay of Union City submitted this photograph published in the Enquirer and News on March 29, 1980. The photograph, dated 1904, shows the powerhouse for the former hydroelectric plant under construction at the Ceresco dam site on the Kalamazoo River. After the brick-and-cypress-facility was built, the dam across the river created a millpond and furnished power to the surrounding area for almost 50 years. Consumers Power Co., which bought out owner Commonwealth Power Co. in 1915, shut down the powerhouse in 1953, deeming it unprofitable. The dam remained until 2013, when Canadian oil transport corporation Enbridge purchased and removed the dam as part of the company's mitigation for the 2010 oil spill. |
