Description:
The construction of the Post Tavern as well as several other landmarks at the turn of the century portrayed a city determined to live up to in moniker, "the queen city of Michigan." The Feb. 23, 1900, Battle Creek Moon boasted, "No one will be able to pass through Battle Creek without seeing the Phelps Sanatorium, the Post Tavern and six-story business block as well as the Advance and Nichols & Shepard shops, sanitarium, Review & Herald and other buildings of which any city might be proud. Post Tavern would open on Jan. 1, 1901.
