Description:
This photo, published in the Enquirer and News on Oct. 31, 1971, shows Ward Cottage on Ward's Island, in about 1900. Charles A. Ward, the eldest son of pioneer settler Joseph M. Ward, acquired the island through a federal land grant on Jan. 20, 1876, and it remained in the Ward family for 79 years. The island was once the headquarters for the old Goguac Boat Club, which was organized in 1873 with Charles Ward, who followed his family in the grain business, as its first president.
