The Soldiers and Sailors Monument in McCamly park, shown here in 1983, was erected next to City Hall in 1901. The bronze sculpture, called "The Defense of the Flag," sits atop a granite column. According to the Moon Press journal, more than 15,000 people attended the dedication. The design was submitted by the Harrison Granite Co. of Barre, Vt. The monument was moved from Monument Park to McCamly Park in 1966. |
