Description:
Musical string manufacturer V.C. Squier Co., one of Battle Creek's oldest businesses, announced in May 1981 that it would cease operations July 2, putting most of its 107 employees at the plant on 35 S. Edison St. out of work. The company traced its birth to 1882, according to a May 19, 1981, story by Enquirer and News Business Editor Rick Burnham. Victor C. Squier had opened a violin repair shop in downtown Battle Creek, where he also made violins. At the time of the closure, the company made strings for Fender guitars and other fretted instruments.
