The Enquirer and News published the news of Kellogg Co.'s decision to end plant tours on Page B5 of the Nov. 5, 1980, Enquirer and News — the day after Ronald Reagan's landslide victory over President Jimmy Carter. The company reversed that decision in January 1981 — at least for a few years — after an emotional outcry. One example of that outcry was on the Nov. 9 business page, where a headline read, "Cancellation of Kellogg Co. tours produces uncertainty, anger here." Douglas Deaton, director of the Calhoun County Visitor and Convention Bureau, estimated an annual loss of between $500,000 and $1 million to the tourism economy. |
