Description:
The walls of McCamly Square rise in the block bordered by Capital Avenue Southwest, West Jackson Street, South McCamly Street and Hamblin Avenue in Battle Creek. The buildings on the superblock would include the 15-story, 248-room Stouffer Hotel, the Kellogg Center and the retail concourse and atrium. Enquirer and News reporter Stan Kaufman wrote July 7, 1980, "Imagine a concrete wall three-foot high and one-foot wide between Battle Creek and Galesburg — a distance of about 15 miles. That is the amount of concrete that is expected to be poured to construct the three buildings in the $25.3 million McCamly Square Project." Robert Campbell, Stouffer Hotel vice president, told the newspaper on Aug. 24 of that year that "This will be more than a place to sleep. It will be the center of a new atmosphere ... a new beginning of progress."
