Crews demolish the Stark Building at 10 W. State St. on Sept. 24, 1979, to create space for additional parking. The building bore the name of Clarence J. Stark, founder of Stark's Restaurant Equipment Supplies Co., established in 1935. A bronze plaque on an outer wall of the building noted that the Stark building sat on the sites of a blacksmith shop and foundry, which were the origins of the Nichols & Shepard Co., one of the national's leading manufacturers of reliable steam engines and efficient threshing machines in the 19th century. |
