A pair of bomb threats forced the evacuations of the Metropolitan County Building, the first on Aug. 19, 1974, and another the following day. In the first, authorities responded to telephoned warnings. In the second, an intake worker found a note on her desk signed by "Warriors of the People" and found a stick of dynamite in a drawer. The note said, "The next time it will be for real. Close this slave camp down." The note was signed "W.O.P. Warriors of the People," and was followed by the postscript, "We are prepared to die." Another call Tuesday evening warned that dynamite might be placed at the city's wastewater treatment plant or at the Verona pumping station. Although the warnings caused a lot of anxiety and employee absences, authorities reported no credible threats. |
