About 4,000 German prisoners held at Fort Custer hear the news of Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945. It was the first time since war prisoners had been assigned to Fort Custer that they all had been assembled for an announcement. The Enquirer and News reported the following day that the soldiers received the news "without a single display of emotion." |
