dc.description The R. Binder Co. meat market, shown here in a 1923 photograph, was among Battle Creek's oldest family-owned businesses when it was sold in 1955 to the Coldwater Provision Co. According to the June 11, 1977, article that accompanied this photo, it was known as the "Binder Fresh, Salt and Smoked Meat Market." Charles and John Binder, who inherited the business from their father, Robert, were co-managers of the store located at 34 Main St. (Michigan Avenue) in the heart of the Binder Block. The business was founded in 1879 on South Jefferson Avenue (Capital Avenue), and moved into the Binder Block in 1887. Today, Binder Park golf course and the Binder Park Zoo bear the name of Charles Binder, who died Nov. 6, 1956. The gift of 618 acres in Newton Township, made in 1957 by Cecilia M. Binder in memory of her late husband, more than doubled the size of Battle Creek's park and recreation facilities. en_US
